BIEDO in partnership with Wondai State School, is in the planning stages of a Community Permaculture Garden. Students involved in the garden are the year 7 & 8’s and the Sustainable Science elective students from years 9 & 10 whilst the manual arts class will be helping with some elements and ALL children will ultimately use the garden.
The project has the support of Wondai Garden Club, parents, community members and BMRG. Community members will be encouraged to become a ‘Friend’ of the garden and actively participate in all aspects of the project.
The garden will incorporate examples of alternative building and power technologies such as cob, mud brick, wind and solar power generation. It will also include a sun dial, a bush food garden, a bed to attract native birds and bees, an orchard and beds for herbs and vegetables which will be looked after by many of the classes in the school. The manual arts class will build a chook dome for the garden and worm farms and compost bins will be an integral part of the plan. Where possible the children will be encouraged to recycle and reuse materials in building the infrastructure needed.
Vegetables and herbs grown will be used by the tuck shop and the home economics class as well as being distributed back into the community in times of excess. Other plants grown – such as gourds and luffas – will be used for art, craft and music within the school.
